Notes from World Book Encyclopedia:Treaty of Verdun - divided Charlemagne's empire into three parts. Charlemagne's grandsons fought over control of the empire after their father died in 840, and finally signedthe treaty in 843. Charles the Bald received most of what is now France. Louis the German took almost all the land east of the Rhine, whichbecame modern Germany. Lothair kept the title of Emperor, and ruled astrip of land in the middle from the North Sea to central Italy. As aresult of the treaty, the lands that were to become France and Germany were effectively divided. The section in between remained a battlegroundfor a thousand years. Italy soon fell away from Lothair's kingdom. Inlater years part of his kingdom became known as Lotharingia, or later, Lorraine. The partition agreed upon at Verdun marked the end ofthe political unity of the Christian countries of western Europe.SOURCES: LDSFamily History Library, ancestral file #9HMN-S6 (familysearch.org)
